The plaque bearing the names of Quebec firefighters who died in the line of duty was recently updated. Set at the base of the monument inaugurated in 2013, this plaque carries deep meaning: it reminds us that behind every name is a story of dedication, a family forever changed, and a community that will never forget.

The growing number of names on the plaque is a powerful reminder of just how demanding and dangerous this profession can be. Beyond the risks inherent to daily emergency response, firefighters face other, more insidious threats. A 2022 study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer found that firefighters are 9% more likely to be diagnosed with cancer and 14% more likely to die from it than the general population. At the same time, the number of cancers recognized as occupational diseases in Quebec remains lower than in other Canadian provinces.

If you happen to be in the area, we encourage you to stop and take a moment to see the updated plaque. It is a small but meaningful way to show respect for those who gave so much in service to their community.

For the fourth year in a row, we were proud partners of the Rendez-vous familial des pompiers de Montréal, held at Angrignon Park from July 11 to 13. This family-friendly event features a variety of activities for kids and adults alike, including 1, 5, and 10 km races, children’s entertainment, and a free BBQ. It is a great opportunity for fire safety professionals to show their community involvement and promote their profession.

A standout feature of this beloved event is the Firefit competition, an immersive challenge inspired by the firefighting profession that puts participants’ strength and physical fitness to the test. We invited our Desjardins partners to join in the fun by competing in the corporate category.

For a few moments, under a scorching sun, about 20 of our green-hearted representatives got to experience segments of the relay course that give a real sense of how demanding a fire intervention can be. Suited up in full firefighter gear and breathing apparatus, they tackled the course with enthusiasm and big smiles.

While the Firefit course takes under 5 minutes to complete, the sweat was very real! The energy and camaraderie between teams were wonderful to witness, and every participant walked away with the same takeaway: firefighters truly earn their esteemed reputation, because this is one tough profession.

Here are a few snapshots from this fantastic day, along with an open invitation to our network to join us in 2026! An outstanding teambuilding experience worth putting on your calendar.

The Caisse du Réseau municipal is thrilled to announce the next chapter in its ongoing partnership with the Fondation des pompiers du Québec pour les grands brûlés. This long-standing collaboration, rooted in shared values of solidarity, prevention, and education, is now reaching a new milestone with a $75,000 commitment over three years to support the growth of the FLAMBO program.

FLAMBO: A fun tool for a serious cause

FLAMBO is so much more than just an educational program. It is a colourful, interactive world built to help kids and their families learn about fire safety in a way that truly sticks. Through games, fun activities, and lovable characters, FLAMBO makes fire prevention engaging and memorable for young learners.

The program is also a great resource for fire prevention technicians, giving them hands-on tools to support their outreach work with different audiences and helping them carry their awareness mission further into their communities.

A real commitment to keeping everyone safe

By supporting FLAMBO, the Caisse du Réseau municipal is reaffirming its commitment to the safety and well-being of communities. This financial support will help the Fondation des pompiers keep developing and sharing the program across Quebec, building a lasting culture of prevention along the way.

“We are proud to be part of this great adventure, and we want to recognize the outstanding work of Quebec’s fire prevention technicians and the Fondation des pompiers, whose dedication helps bring the importance of prevention to communities across Quebec,” said the Caisse’s leadership.

An inspiring collaboration

This partnership is a great example of what can happen when passionate people come together around a cause they believe in. Together, the Caisse du Réseau municipal and the Fondation des pompiers du Québec pour les grands brûlés are working toward a safer future for generations to come.

This partnership is made possible thanks to the Caisse’s Community Development Fund (CDF). Through its financial support and community engagement initiatives, the Caisse Desjardins du Réseau municipal champions collective projects that bring real energy and vitality to the municipal community. We are driven by a mission to foster the economic and social well-being of our community by bringing together municipal employees and fire safety professionals. We support the projects, causes, and events that matter to our members and make a real impact on their lives and well-being.
